Malden, MA: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

Many Qualified Maldonians Failed to File for Economic Stimulus Package (ESP)

Malden, MA:  The Cyber Café @ Malden Square announced today that approximately 1,467 Malden residents who may qualify for the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) have not yet filed a return to claim it.  The IRS released the figures to the Cyber Café, noting that the figures represent SSA and Veterans benefits recipients who may not realize they qualify for the ESP.  There is still time as you have until October 15, 2008 to file for the ESP.  It can take up to 8 weeks for the IRS to get your stimulus payment to you.

It takes about 5-10 minutes to apply, and the Cyber Café will electronically file your special 1040A Return for you.  That gets your claim into the IRS more quickly, speeding up your payment.  Also, you can arrange for direct deposit; just bring a check or your checkbook so we can get the correct routing and account number onto the application.

Just come in during the posted walk-in times noted below or schedule an appointment.  This service is not restricted to Malden residents, so feel free to call even in you live in another town or city.

Dates/Times for walk-ins & appointments:

·        Thursdays: July 10 & 24; August 7 & 21; Sept 4 & 18; Oct 2 & 9; from 10-12 at the Cyber Café

·        Saturdays: July 12 & 26; August 9 & 23; Sept 6 & 20; Oct 4; from 10-1 at the Cyber Café

If these dates/times do not work for you, call the appointment line and we’ll try to line up an appointment for you.

Appointment Line: 866-833-2823 (toll-free; not monitored; leave a message with the best days/times for us to call you back).  Mention the Stimulus Return in your message, as the line is used for several different programs.

Who Qualifies:

Individuals with earned income (wages or self-employment) more than $3,000 in 2007; also, individuals receiving more than $3,000 in certain Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security Disability (SSDI), Railroad Retirement, and certain Veterans’ Benefits (disability, retirement, or survivors’ benefits from the Dept. of Veterans’ Affairs).  All individuals must have a valid Social Security number (not a Taxpayer Identification number).

Who Does Not Qualify:

Individuals whose earned income is less than $3,000 in 2007 and do not receive one of the benefits stated above; individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI); individuals on a company pension (i.e., not Social Security or Railroad retirement).

Please Note: if you filed a 2007 Income Tax Return, the IRS will automatically calculate and send any Stimulus payment to you.  You should not file the special Stimulus Package return.

Malden, MA: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

Cyber Café Awarded $20K Accessibility Grant

Malden, MA:

Access Malden, a new initiative of the Cyber Café @ Malden Square, was awarded $20,000 through the Connections for All (C4All) program of the Community Technology Centers Network (CTCNet). The Cyber Café is Malden Square’s walk-in computer and Internet center.

Access Malden will enable the Cyber Café to expand its hardware and software accessibility tools and train more volunteers and patrons in their use. A major goal of the grant is to serve more people with disabilities through existing Cyber Café programs and services.

Launched in 2006, the C4All program aims to enhance the capacity of Community Technology Centers (CTCs) to serve people with a broad range of abilities. Funded by a grant from AT&T, C4All is a collaboration between CTCNet and the Alliance for Technology Access (ATA).

The Cyber Café was one of 200 participants representing over 130 organizations attending 1 of the10 C4All Accessibility Institutes held in 8 states from November 2006 through January 2007. Twenty-four organizations that participated in the Institutes were selected to receive $1000 AccessNow Awards to help make simple and cost-effective improvements to their programs and facilities to make them more inviting and accessible.

In April 2007, CTCNet awarded 14 Accessibility Grants totaling $280,000 to CTCs across the country. The grants are being used to expand their capacity to serve people with physical and learning disabilities, enabling them to have greater access to educational, vocational, and social opportunities. In addition, they will provide targeted professional development to CTC staff and provide assistive technology resources and guidance for CTCs in order to create more inclusive community-based environments for all people.

Operated by the Community Technology Access Coalition (CTAC), the Cyber Café @ Malden Square is a collaboration of Malden Access Television, Murray Learning Associates, Office of Representative Christopher G. Fallon, The Career Place, and Tri-City Community Action Program (Tri-CAP).
